Farm And Ranch Stress Assistance Network

The Farm And Ranch Stress Assistance Network (FRSAN) program establishes a network that connects individuals who are engaged in farming, ranching, and other agriculture-related occupations to stress assistance programs. Programs that offer access to resources (e.g., information and skills) and people (e.g., Cooperative Extension educators, health care providers and peer-to-peer farmer support) can help identify underlying causes of farm/ranch risk factors. Applicants can work with farmers and ranchers to share the resources available, help farmers develop mechanisms to adapt to the unique stressors and behavioral and mental health challenges they face, and to know resources available when they seek assistance.

      Eligible Activities

      NIFA is seeking applications from regional partnerships and collaborations that are led by or include CES, SDA, Indian tribes, and nonprofit organizations with expertise in providing professional agricultural behavioral health awareness, counseling as appropriate, education, training, and referral for other forms of assistance as necessary to address stress and behavioral and mental health challenges, including suicide risk, among farmers.

      Two programs are currently available under this NOFO:

      1) Regional Center: Regional Centers will implement education, training and services through a robust network of partners to assist farmers during times of stress
      2) National Farmer Distress Helpline: applicants will operate a 24/7/365 crisis line dedicated to addressing the unique stressors and behavioral health needs of agricultural communities.

      • The term “farmer” is used in the broadest sense and may be interpreted to include agricultural
      farmers, ranchers, fishers, workers, business owners, and non-industrial private forest owners
      and managers. Similarly, the term “farming” will be used.
