This CINR II NOFO will provide opportunity for university-led teams that have performed high quality work through the Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) to propose new projects that complement and enhance ongoing CINR research through a competitive application and review process. This opportunity is focused on continuing promising research pathways that directly complement and extend work previously awarded through NEUP, applicable to projects concluding between Jan 1, 2026 and Sep 30, 2026. Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) Access Only projects are NOT eligible.

      • Prime applicant must be a U.S. university or college and the current CINR lead institution
      • Applications must originate from the lead CINR university/institution
      • National laboratories and industry partners may participate only as sub-recipients
      • Research consortiums are allowed and may include: U.S. universities and colleges, National laboratories, Non-profit research institutes, Industry and utility partners, International partners (with restrictions)
      • International partners may participate, but: no U.S. Government funds may be provided to entities incorporated outside the U.S.

      Eligible Activities

      • Nuclear energy-related research continuing promising prior work funded by NEUP.

      All applications under this CINR Phase II NOFO must demonstrate a strong tie to at least one of these four mission priorities:

      • Keep existing U.S. nuclear reactors operating
      • Deploy new nuclear reactors
      • Secure and sustain our nuclear fuel cycle
      • Maintain U.S. leadership in nuclear energy technology
