Nonpoint Source Management Grants For Tribes

The Indian Tribes and Intertribal Consortia for Nonpoint Source Management Grants Program (Under Clean Water Act Section 319) awards funding to Tribes for one- to two-year projects that implement Best Management Practices (BMPs) outlined in their approved Tribal Nonpoint Source Management Program Plans. Projects must be an on-the-ground project focused on protecting or restoring reservation water resources by increasing the number of restored waterbodies, preventing future ecological degradation, and helping Tribes track and measure measurable water quality improvements.

      Only Tribes are eligible and must:

      • Be federally recognized
      • Have an EPA approved NPS assessment report
      • Have an EPA-approved NPS management program
      • Have “Treatment-in-a-manner-similar-to-a-State” (TAS) status

      Eligible Activities

      • On-the-ground BMP implementation, such as stabilizing eroding streambanks and restoring natural channels
      • Implementation may be augmented by activities such as developing watershed plans, developing nonpoint source ordinances, and education and outreach

      • Applications that request more than $175,000 of federal funding will be rejected from further consideration.
      • All applications must contain an on-the-ground project. Funding for otherwise eligible project activities, including development of a watershed-based plan, is limited to 25 percent of the federal portion of the grant. Tribal staff time supporting the implementation of BMPs is not included in this 25 percent cap.
