Small-Scale Water Efficiency Projects

Through the WaterSMART Small-Scale Water Efficiency Projects, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) provides 50/50 cost share funding to irrigation and water districts, tribes, states and other entities with water or power delivery authority for small water efficiency improvements that have been identified through previous planning efforts. Projects eligible for funding include installation of flow measurement or automation in a specific part of a water delivery system, lining of a section of a canal to address seepage, or other similar projects that are limited in scope.

      Eligible Activities

      Reclamation will provide funding for small-scale on-the-ground water efficiency projects which seek to implement work identified in an applicant’s water planning efforts. Eligible projects include:
      • Municipal metering
      • Irrigation flow measurement
      • Canal lining/piping
      • Water delivery automation
      • Flow measurement
      • Other projects that increase water efficiency

      Note: This NOFO is not intended for projects to replace existing SCADA systems.

      Projects that are considered normal operations, maintenance, and replacement (OM&R) are not eligible for funding under this NOFO. OM&R is described as system improvements that replace or repair existing infrastructure or function without providing increased efficiency or effectiveness of water distribution over the expected life of the improvement.

      Cost share requirement of 50%.
