Clean School Bus Program Rebates

Rebates of up to $325,000 are available for school districts to replace older diesel buses with electric buses and other types of zero or low emission buses. For electric buses, rebates are available for charging infrastructure as well. Applicants can request rebates for up to 50 buses.

      In addition to Public School Districts and Tribes, for-profit and non-profit entities that sell, lease, or contract for service clean or ZE busses or related charging infrastructure or arrange financing are eligible. High-need school districts, rural school districts, and Tribal school districts are prioritized. Applicants requesting funding for the replacement of school buses that serve a prioritized school district will be offered more funding per bus and receive preference in the selection process.

    • Requirements

      Applicants can request funding for up to 50 buses. The maximum rebate amount per bus is dependent on (1) the replacement bus fuel type, (2) the replacement bus size, and (3) whether the school district served by the buses is prioritized. Buses must be diesel powered, model year 2010 or older, and scrapped if selected for funding. Options exist if a district does not have buses from model year 2010 or older. Buses must be operational at time of application submission.

      Selectees may be eligible for Inflation Reduction Act tax credits applicable to their bus and infrastructure purchases; namely, the Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit provides up to $40,000 for qualified commercial clean vehicles and the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit provides up to $100,000 for qualified charging and refueling infrastructure.
